In the hands of skilled artisans concrete coloring can produce a work of art that is a unique expression of the style and taste of the property owner. The following descriptions are intended only as a starting point for discussions:
INTEGRAL COLOR – During new construction color can be added into the ready-mix batch. During the mixing it is distributed throughout the concrete. If a surface is later chipped or gouged the continuous color of the slab camouflages the imperfections. Integral color produced muted, earth tones unless light sand is added. Integral color may be polished.
ANTIQUING TREATMENTS AND COLOR HARDENERS – Surface applied color used when fresh concrete is placed is often used for exterior hardscapes that are textured or imprinted with pattern stamps or rollers. More than one color may be used so that the low spots in the pattern are accentuated by darker hues. This type coloring requires the highest level of skill to appear pleasing and intentional.
DYES AND ACRYLIC STAINS – Can produce intense, vivid colors for interior use. These strong and bright colors are sometimes used for graphics, logos, insignias or accent areas.
TRANSLUCENT STAINS – Whether chemical or water-based, concrete stains are like wood stains and allow the surface to show through. Earth-toned colors are often popular. Concrete has a natural appearance like silk, wood or stone. The inherent variations in the aggregates and matrix are appealing to some property owners as part of a bold modern look or rustic style. Stains can be used to show off the natural variations.
The application of any of these materials can vary in color during use. Color charts are useful to start the selection process. Actual concrete chips or sample panels will provide a more realistic representation, but are not exact.
